Bizarre comments highlight why Dolphins' Mike McDaniel is on hot seat

Once praised for his offensive mind and play-calling acumen, Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel now appears to be on the hottest seat in the NFL.

And after Sunday's 33-27 Week 2 loss to the rival New England Patriots, McDaniel is feeling the heat in Miami that has nothing to do with the weather.

The now 0-2 McDaniel then proceeded to offer some strange postgame analysis that both confused and agitated Dolphins fans.

“Uhm, we’re, to win games you have to win the game, umm, not lose the game… honestly. And that, that is how you lose the game," McDaniel told reporters.

He even addressed his job security as well.

"I think if I worry about my job security, I won't be doing my job — and I think that inherently is against all things that I believe in," said McDaniel. "I've never felt entitled to this position and it's very important for me to spend all my waking hours worrying about exactly how to do my job.

"I won't spend one moment thinking about all the things that, whatever people want me to think about. [I'm] thinking about this team and the Buffalo Bills here, after I get done with this podium."

The only positive from Sunday for McDaniel is that his offense managed to score on multiple possessions, something that didn't occur in their 33-8 season-opening loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Why Miami Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel is on the hot seat

However, with the Dolphins' season already going nowhere fast, McDaniel's days in Miami may be numbered.

A climb up the coaching ranks that included stints in various offensive roles, most notably with Washington, Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons and helping the San Francisco 49ers reach Super Bowl LIV as offensive coordinator, McDaniel landed his first head coaching opportunity in 2022.

McDaniel then instantly started turning around a Dolphins franchise that had failed to reach the postseason since 2016. He guided Miami back to the playoffs in his first year at the helm, as the 9-8 Dolphins lost in the Wild Card Round to the Buffalo Bills.

It was in 2023 that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa took his game to another level. Tagovailoa's success under McDaniel led the Dolphins to an 11-6 season. And while Miami would once again fall in the wild-card round, they lost a Kansas City Chiefs team in the midst of a dynasty.

But the wheels then fell off one year later. With Tagovailoa showing signs of regression, Miami endured a miserable 8-9 season.

The Dolphins offense grew so stagnant that eight-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Tyreek Hill failed to surpass 1,000 receiving yards for only the third time in his career and first since playing in only 12 games with the Chiefs in 2019.

To make matters worse, McDaniel is now tasked with trying to find a way to match points with Josh Allen and the potent Buffalo Bills offense in Week 3. So barring a major upset, the Dolphins are destined to start the 2025 season 0-3.

Can McDaniel find a way to keep his job? As Miami's season begins to crater, the answer to that question already seems clear.
