Golden State Warriors fans have been stuck in limbo all summer. Jonathan Kuminga, a 2021 lottery pick, has been locked in contract negotiations with the franchise for months. Neither Kuminga nor the Warriors has found a suitable resolution.
On Sept. 15, Warriors forward Draymond Green was asked via social media for his thoughts on the situation. Rather than lambasting Kuminga for his standoff, the four-time NBA champion appeared to be understanding toward the overall situation.
"Negotiations are rarely easy, but they usually get done in the end," Green replied.
Kuminga has reportedly spoken with other teams around the NBA. The Phoenix Suns, Chicago Bulls and Sacramento Kings are three teams expected to hold an interest in the explosive forward. However, the Warriors appear to have resisted any and all negotiations regarding a potential sign-and-trade.
Despite being with the Warriors for four years, Kuminga has struggled to cement himself in head coach Steve Kerr's rotation. Last season, he played in 47 games, with 10 of them coming as a starter. He averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists.
According to ESPN's Tim McMahon, Kuminga's stalemate with the Warriors could lead to chemistry issues behind the scenes next season. McMahon made his comments during a Sept. 15 episode of "NBA Today."
"Steve Kerr doesn't want Kuminga. Kuminga doesn't want to play for the Warriors, in part, because he knows the coach doesn't want him ... There are going to be chemistry issues to put it mildly. This is going to be a disaster if they bring back Kuminga," MacMahon said. "...You think he's going to want to pass the ball? You think he's going to want to play team ball? He's going to want the ball. He's going to want minutes. Steve Kerr doesn't think he fits."
Kuminga's standoff with the Warriors has been very public. The franchise has put its entire summer on hold, so much so that it remains the only team in the league yet to add any new faces to the roster.
Interestingly, Green's comment goes directly against what McMahon is postulating. And the truth is, nobody knows what the locker-room atmosphere will be like. Kuminga could still choose to re-sign with the Warriors.
However, if he chooses to ink his qualifying offer, and the Warriors continue to have a cloud hanging over them, he may find himself walking into a frosty reception every day at work.
Kuminga's situation will likely continue for a little while longer. And if that impacts how the Warriors start their training camp, then it would be logical for veterans such as Green to begin showing their frustrations.
Nevertheless, Kuminga is doing what he thinks is right for his career. How that ultimately plays out is the question everyone is waiting for an answer to.
