Trae Young adds chip to his shoulder amid new beef with Patrick Beverley

In what’s been a relatively quiet offseason in the NBA, a new beef has emerged over the past few days. It started with a simple interaction on X in which Patrick Beverley claimed that All-Star’s take the event for granted in response to a tweet asking why player’s put more effort into open gym runs in the offseason than they do in the All-Star game.

Trae Young had a curt response under Beverley's post.

“Relax. Let us speak for ourselves,” Young responded.

From there, the beef seems to have taken off, both players turning to their podcasts to address each other.

Beverley took the first shot.

“I don’t think he’s won enough to even speak to me like that,” Beverley said.

He claimed that he’s spoken to other players in Atlanta who said they don’t want to play there because they don’t think Young is a good leader or a good teammate. He also took shots at Youngs’s lack of success so far.

"He's been to the playoffs three times. I've been [there] nine. He's been in the NBA seven years. My first seven years I didn't miss the playoffs at all, in the Western Conference."

Young rebutted with the obvious, he’s the leader of his team whereas Beverley has only ever been a role-player.

"What have you won?" Young said. "...It's levels to this s---."

He brought up the talent level of the teams Pat has been on, pointing out that he played with several current and future Hall of Famers such as LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kawhi Leonard, James Harden and Anthony Edwards.

"A lot of those wins you had, basically all of those wins? You were being carried by an All-Star, if not two at the same time," Young added.

Trae finished off by saying that Bev was doing things for attention, but that “it’s all love,” and took a subtle shot by saying that he can't engage anymore because he has to focus on getting ready for the upcoming season.

Beverley is now out of the NBA, most recently playing for Hapoel Tel Aviv. Young, however, is looking to bring the Atlanta Hawks success this upcoming season. With the recent additions of Kristaps Porzingis, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Luke Kennard, along with the emergence of Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels and last year’s No. 1 overall pick Zaccharie Risacher, this may be the best supporting cast Young has had in his career.

While Young won’t get the chance to face Beverley this season, their newly developed beef leaves him with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove. The stars are aligning, and this may be the perfect opportunity for him to build towards cementing himself in Hawks, and maybe even NBA, history.

The Eastern Conference was devastated by injuries, leaving the door wide open for teams to move up in the standings from where they were last year. The Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks may be the favorites to make it out of the conference, but Atlanta will be looking to find a spot right behind them with Young leading the charge.

Last year, Young averaged 24.2 points, 11.6 assists and 3.1 rebounds while shooting 41.1 percent from the floor and 34 percent from three-point range. He led the league in assists in a year which his efficiency and scoring took a small hit. He was also named an All-Star for the fourth time in his career, and finished fourth overall in Clutch Player of the Year voting.
