'I'm proud of him': College football Hall of Famer has praise, advice for Texas QB Arch Manning

Coming into the college football season, the hype surrounding Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning was off the charts.

Despite all that, Manning has not looked at all like the Heisman favorite he was projected as to begin the season. He has completed a below-average 55.3 percent of his throws, mainly due to his poor mechanics in the pocket, and even received boos from the Longhorns faithful after a dismal opening half against UTEP on Saturday.

Even with the poor showing so far from Manning, college football Hall of Famer and former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow had nothing but praise for him and shared what advice he would give Manning.

Tim Tebow gives Texas QB Arch Manning some helpful advice

"I would encourage him. You're a gifted player, you're a really good player. You just need to be encouraged," Tebow said during an appearance on the "Rich Eisen Show" on Thursday. "Remember it for the love of the game. He's at a location right now with great coaches, great players around him, but there's just a lot of pressure. Pressure is real.

"... I'm proud of him. I'm proud of the way he's handled it, but also try to block that out. Remember how much you love the game. And yeah, people will keep talking. They'll be praise and they'll be criticism. A lot of times, maybe the praise is sometimes off the charts and criticism is too. And it's usually somewhere in between and just try to block it out. Love the game. Love your teammates. Enjoy it."

While Manning showed signs of improvement against San Jose State in Week 2, highlighted by an 83-yard strike to wide receiver Parker Livingstone, it is clear that he has been out of rhythm in the pocket and reading defenses too quickly.

Manning's QBR (49.6) is 88th in the FBS, and he only has 579 passing yards, six TDs and three interceptions through three games. He has also added three more TDs on the ground, but ESPN analyst Chase Daniel feels like "everything's completely off" when looking at the film, per Jaren Kawada of ClutchPoints.

At least for the Texas QB, slow starts run in the Manning family, so perhaps things will improve for him soon. After a home game against Sam Houston on Saturday night (8 p.m. ET, ESPN +, SEC Network +), the Longhorns (2-1) have matchups against No. 11 Oklahoma (Oct. 11), No. 20 Vanderbilt (Nov. 1), No. 5 Georgia (Nov. 15) and No. 10 Texas A&M (Nov. 28), all games Texas could be vulnerable in if Manning does not correct his issues.

If Texas is going to make the College Football Playoff for a third consecutive season, Manning needs to start showing some improvement quick, especially with the talent around him on offense and a defense that is currently 12th in the country in opponent points per game (10.3 PPG), per Team Rankings.

The season is still young, but a tough schedule awaits as Manning looks to respond to the adversity and get Texas back on track after a slow start.
