Former Eagles star sounds alarms over potential A.J. Brown problem

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown gave fantasy football owners few reasons to be excited after he produced lackluster stats over the team's first two wins of the season.

Former Eagles All-Pro Hugh Douglas sounded alarms on Thursday about what could be to come for Philadelphia if Brown doesn't have a larger offensive role.

The "big" A.J. Brown concern

"That’s a big concern," Douglas said about Brown possibly getting frustrated this fall, Cayden Steele of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com shared. "There’s no question about that. A.J. is a fierce competitor. ... The bottom line is this: A.J. wants to be involved. A.J. wants to feel like he’s contributing. He is, but not to the extent he wants to contribute. And that’s a problem."

Douglas wasn't merely spit-balling with his Brown take. In December 2024, Brown seemed to criticize Jalen Hurts after the quarterback passed for just 108 yards in Philadelphia's 22-16 win over the Carolina Panthers. Shortly after Brown and Hurts helped the Eagles win Super Bowl LIX, the receiver admitted that the two "alphas who want to be the best and demand greatness from each other and everyone around us" dealt with "issues" last season.

More recently, Brown caught one pass on one target in Philadelphia's 24-20 Week 1 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 4. He then recorded five receptions on eight targets for 27 yards in the Eagles' 20-17 victory at the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 14.

Does Jalen Hurts need to feed A.J. Brown?

"You have a fiercely competitive player on your squad that feels like he’s a pawn or not a significant piece," Douglas added about Brown. "He’s out there doing cardio. ... A.J.’s a monster. A.J. is Godzilla around these parts. Godzilla needs to be fed. It ain’t going to be two more weeks where we’re going to get docile A.J. Brown."

Hurts accepted responsibility this week for the fact that the Eagles began Friday ranked 31st in the league with an average of 119 passing yards per game, per ESPN stats. Perhaps Hurts will look for Brown when Philadelphia hosts the 2-0 Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

As of Friday morning, ESPN BET had the unbeaten Eagles as 3.5-point favorites for that matchup.
