On Thursday, New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams revealed that he and his teammates "made a pact as a defense" that their performance in the 30-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 2 "will never happen again."
With his team at 0-2, first-year Jets head coach Aaron Glenn claimed members of the roster have remained positive heading into Sunday's game against the 2-0 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"Listen, our guys are upbeat and motivated," Glenn explained, per the Associated Press' Dennis Waszak Jr. "Here's what they do know: It was Week 2 and the sky's not falling. As much as we all think it is, as much as all the outside noise, as much as you guys write about that, the sky's not falling."
The Jets' defense has failed to live up to expectations through the season's first two weeks, including in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. According to ESPN stats, Gang Green entered Friday ranked 30th in the NFL in opponent points scored per game (32) and 23rd in yards surrendered per contest (337).
"I've been a part of that situation before, so our guys can rely on that," Glenn said about the Jets' record. "A lot of our coaches have been a part of that situation before, and they can rely on that. And some of these players have, too. So, we're looking forward to moving on. And at 0-2, the sky's not falling."
On Thursday, Williams added that "the standard has to come to life that coach AG has been preaching" following back-to-back defeats.
"That's how it's supposed to be," Glenn said in response to Williams' fiery comments. "In my opinion, you take every game personal. You find something within each game to figure out how you can take it personal. ... So when you give up the yards that we've given up, I mean, you should look within yourself and figure out what can I do better, myself individually, and then us as a team to make sure it doesn't happen again? "And I'm not surprised, just the type of player he is. I'm not surprised he said something like that."
Jets starting quarterback Justin Fields is sidelined while in the concussion protocol, meaning 36-year-old Tyrod Taylor will be under center at Tampa Bay's Raymond James Stadium. Taylor could be an upgrade over what Fields gave the Jets in Week 2.
As of Friday afternoon, ESPN BET had the Jets as 6.5-point road underdogs against the Bucs.
