Following a 0-2 start, the New York Giants enter Week 3 needing to show some sort of promise with head coach Brian Daboll's seat getting warmer.
If the Giants continue to struggle, Daboll is expected to turn to rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart as a "saving grace" to show progress and hope for the future.
Per Dan Duggan of The Athletic, the Giants are expected to expand the role of Dart and fellow rookie running back Cam Skattebo against the Chiefs on "Sunday Night Football."
New York gave Dart snaps near the red zone, and Duggan thinks Dart will receive snaps in the red zone this week.
"It wouldn’t be a surprise if there’s an expanded red-zone package of plays for Dart on Sunday," Duggan wrote. "The Giants’ red-zone offense has been abysmal, scoring a touchdown on just 1-of-7 trips inside opponents’ 20-yard line this season. That lone score, of course, was set up by the long run with Dart running the zone read."
The extra reps would provide valuable experience for Dart, who could be in line to make his first start as soon as Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Giants are looking for Skattebo, whom they took in the fourth round of April's draft, to become the lead back.
"Daboll said the split (with Tyrone Tracy) could be 'week-to-week,' but it seems like Skattebo is in position to take over as the lead back," Duggan wrote. "That the Giants used Tracy as a kickoff returner last week was a sign they anticipated a lighter workload on offense. Using both backs in the screen game could be an effective counter to Kansas City’s blitzes."
The Giants should play Dart and Skattebo as much as possible on Sunday and when they host the Chargers in Week 4. Those games against playoff contenders are likely losses for New York, but the young players should show more poise against the New Orleans Saints in Week 5.
That's a game Daboll needs to show he can win with Dart.
