On paper, the Toronto Blue Jays appear to be an ideal position as the playoffs approach.
At 89-65 entering Saturday, the Blue Jays have the best record in the American League. They hold a three-game lead over the Yankees and a five-game lead over the Red Sox for the AL East, with the Blue Jays holding the tiebreaker over both.
However, there are questions regarding the Blue Jays rotation heading into the final week of the season. Pitchers Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber and Chris Bassitt are likely locked in as the first three starters for Toronto. However, the fourth starter spot is more of a question mark, especially after pitcher Max Scherzer imploded on Friday.
Scherzer was battered in the Blue Jays' 20-1 loss to the Royals on Friday. He failed to complete the first inning, allowing seven runs on seven hits, including a pair of home runs, and a walk, striking out two as he recorded just two outs.
That outing continued a difficult stretch for Scherzer. He has allowed 21 runs on 27 hits, with seven homers and eight walks over his last 20 innings spanning five starts. His ERA jumped from 3.60 to 5.06 in that time as he has been unable to generate outs.
Those struggles leave the Blue Jays with a giant question mark for their fourth starter. Pitchers Jose Berrios and Eric Lauer have been moved to the bullpen, but Berrios could return to the rotation if needed. Top prospect Trey Yesavage impressed in his major league debut but would have just two or three starts with the Blue Jays before the playoffs begin.
The Blue Jays need someone to step up for the final spot in their postseason rotation. Scherzer's struggles could not have come at a worse time.
