Star pass-rusher Micah Parsons featured for the Dallas Cowboys from when they made him a first-round draft pick in 2021 up until the club shockingly traded him to the Green Bay Packers for two first-round selections and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark in late August.
While speaking with reporters on Monday, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones confirmed that the club will not hold any kind of tribute for Parsons when the 26-year-old and the 2-1 Packers play at the 1-2 Cowboys this coming Sunday night.
"I don’t think that’s appropriate this way," Jones said about his decision, per Joseph Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News. "...That’s not to diminish Micah. I think Micah has enough welcome out there, and we just need to show that we’ve got antidotes for that."
Jones' call is hardly surprising considering his working relationship with Parsons allegedly grew "frosty" amid a lengthy contract standoff. Parsons went public with a trade request on Aug. 1 and was eventually sent to Green Bay on Aug. 28. As part of that transaction, he received a four-year, $188M contract that included $136M guaranteed and made him the new highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.
Parsons acknowledged earlier in September that "there's nothing more motivating than when you find out that people you love don't truly believe in you and they thought less of you." Over his first three games with Green Bay, he tallied 1.5 sacks as he worked to return to full fitness after he was slowed by a lingering back issue throughout the summer.
Meanwhile, ESPN stats show that the Packers ended Week 3 ranked third in the league in total defense with 232.3 yards allowed per game and first in opponent points scored per game (14.7). To compare, the Cowboys are 30th in total defense (397.7 yards surrendered per game) and 27th in opponent points scored per contest (30.7).
As of Tuesday morning, ESPN BET had the Packers as 6.5-point road favorites for the upcoming "Sunday Night Football" showdown. It is bound to be an emotional experience for many of the individuals involved.
