With the Texas Longhorns' offense looking clunky, it seemed momentum would be on the Oklahoma Sooners' side heading into their annual rivalry game. However, a key injury could swing the pendulum.
On Tuesday , Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables confirmed starting quarterback John Mateer will undergo surgery after injuring his throwing hand in Saturday's win against the Auburn Tigers.
According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, the QB is scheduled to undergo surgery in Los Angeles on Wednesday, with a recovery timeline of approximately one month. That means there's a high chance he won't play against Texas at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Oct. 11.
He’s set to have the surgery in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Dr. Steven Shin will perform the surgery. He’s considered one of the country's leading hand/wrist surgeons. He’s worked on Drew Brees, Steph Curry and Mike Trout.

Through four games, Mateer has completed 95-of-141 passes for 1,215 yards and tossed six touchdowns and three interceptions. He also logged 190 yards and five touchdowns on 43 carries.
The solid stats placed him in the early Heisman conversation. In a story published Tuesday, On3's Thomas Goldkamp listed him No. 1 in his power rankings for the award.
Venables said QB Michael Hawkins Jr. will step in for Mateer. That may not inspire much confidence.
Hawkins played seven games last season, completing 76-of-120 passes for 783 yards and throwing three touchdowns and two interceptions. He also took 15 sacks for a loss of 60 yards.
Hawkins looked overwhelmed in last season's matchup against Texas. In the 34-3 loss, he finished 19-of-30 passing for 148 yards and posted a below-average 45 QBR. He may struggle against the Longhorns again this season.
No. 10 Texas (3-1) boasts an elite defense. The Longhorns have allowed the country's fourth-fewest points (7.8). In a 14-7 Week 1 loss to Ohio State, the unit held the Buckeyes to 126 yards passing. Remember, Ohio State's roster features standout wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.
The Longhorns still have offensive issues. Entering the season, some thought the passing attack would take off with QB Arch Manning at the helm, but that hasn't happened. Texas ranks 67th in the nation in passing yards (236 YPG).
Like Texas, No. 7 Oklahoma (4-0) features a stingy defense. The Sooners have surrendered the eighth-fewest points (nine PPG) in the country.
But unless Hawkins improves quickly, the Longhorns should remain the favorite heading into the Red River Rivalry. As of Tuesday, ESPN Analytics gives them a 66.3% chance to win the matchup.
