The Michigan Wolverines have had some great running backs carry the rock for them over the years, and Justice Haynes seems poised to be mentioned among that elite group of college football players. We're talking about running backs like Mike Hart, Chris Perry, Anthony Thomas and, most recently, Blake Corum.
Haynes, a junior from Alpharetta, Georgia, transferred from Alabama to Ann Arbor this past offseason, and he's immediately made an impact for the Wolverines.
No Michigan running back in the long history of the program had ever rushed for at least 100 yards in each of his first three games with the program before Haynes did that in big matchups against New Mexico, Oklahoma and Central Michigan. He then added to that incredible start against the Nebraska Cornhuskers this past weekend by rushing 17 times for 149 yards and a touchdown in Michigan's 30-27 win in Lincoln.
That's now four straight games with 100-plus rushing yards, a school record for a newcomer, but the numbers, as impressive as they are, don't tell the whole story.
The eye test suggests that Haynes is an elite college football running back — perhaps not just the best in the Big Ten, but the best in the country. He's got the size to ground it out at the line of scrimmage at 5-foot-11, 210 pounds, but he also has home run speed. That was evidenced, once again, against Nebraska.

Oh, and he's humble.
“I couldn’t do it without the offensive line, the trust these coaches have in me and the whole team,” Haynes said after the win over Nebraska, according to Tony Garcia of the Detroit Free Press. “I’m just thankful to be a part of this team and thankful that God put me in this position.”
What can't he do?
Michigan is 3-1 and ranked No. 19 in the country, and Haynes has been a big part of the team's success. He projects to be a big part of any future success the Wolverines have this season as well.
Per Garcia, the star running back is on pace for 1,611 yards and 18 touchdowns. If he hits those single-season marks, that would put him among the elite running backs in Michigan history. If Haynes keeps knocking out 8.1 yards per carry and at least one touchdown every game (he has six in four games), there's a realistic chance he'll hit those numbers, or better, when all is said and done.
