The Toronto Maple Leafs are in training camp, and as internal competition stirs, a respected insider has given a negative update on a top prospect.
TSN's Mike Johnson believes Easton Cowan will not be on coach Craig Berube's roster for the next NHL season and will be sent to the AHL.
"There are too many players, and he’s the easiest guy to cut. No waivers, all the stuff we know. He can go to the American League and star, power play, 23 minutes a night, first line, all that stuff you would like him to grow into, versus a lesser role he’d play to make this lineup," Johnson said on "OverDrive."
Johnson believes Cowan, 20, needs to do more to impress the Leafs coaching staff and earn a fixed role.

Cowan has NHL-level qualities. Coach Berube has already praised the young forward's work ethic, highlighting his ability to follow instructions.
Johnson's analysis makes sense, as Cowan's progress would not be hindered in the AHL. However, it is also plausible that the Canadian player could skip that process and start playing at the highest level, even in a secondary role. Cowan is a direct, physical and responsible player. While far from being Mitch Marner's direct replacement, he has the qualities to fill that gap in Toronto's forward line.
The 20-year-old dominated the OHL last season, being named MVP of both the regular season and playoffs. He accumulated 69 points in 46 games. He is a rookie, but he has the characteristics to be a standout player in the coming years.
Not rushing his NHL debut is not negative. But it likely won't take more than this season to see him at the highest level, as he has medium-term top-six potential.
