Maple Leafs' gamble on winger pays off in his preseason debut

Matias Maccelli debuted with the Toronto Maple Leafs in a preseason game against the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.

Maccelli, 24, was acquired by the Leafs from the Utah Mammoth for a conditional 2027 third-round pick during the offseason, just after Mitch Marner's departure.

Given the context, expectations were high, and the winger did not disappoint in his first preseason game. Despite the 3-2 overtime loss, Maccelli recorded two assists.

The Finnish player was close to a third assist, and also registered two hits and a blocked shot, a strong start for someone looking to revitalize his career after a disappointing season with Utah (18 points in 55 games).

It's early, but Maccelli has the tools to fit with the Maple Leafs

Maccelli will not be Marner's direct replacement, but he has the qualities to fight for a roster spot. His profile combines creativity, vision and good puck control, all necessary to make a difference on an elite team.

Despite the performance, the winger knows it is too early for conclusions. "Yeah, I mean it’s too early," Maccelli said after the game about his adaptation. "Still trying to figure out how they play, and they’re trying to figure out how I look out there. Just trying to keep building on it."

His contract expires at the end of the season ($3.43M cap hit), so Toronto has the peace of mind that if he doesn't perform, it can free up the cap space next offseason.

The most logical outcome would be for him to adapt to coach Craig Berube's scheme. Maccelli stands out for his playmaking and is versatile enough to play different forward positions, giving Berube options.

For the Maple Leafs, the 24-year-old forward is a gamble, but a low-risk one with a high reward. This season will be defining for his NHL future.
