The Kansas City Chiefs finally got their first win of the season.
Of course, there's not much to brag about taking down the New York Giants, and the offense still looked like a work in progress.
Even so, despite all the missed scoring opportunities, Patrick Mahomes still saw encouraging signs of improvement. Talking ahead of Week 4, the former Super Bowl champion took accountability for the team's poor offensive execution, stating that he's in charge of getting them going.
“We cleaned up our execution,” Mahomes said, via transcript from the team provided by the Salina Post. “I think that’s the most important thing, just making the throws, making the throws whenever they are there. Getting the ball out of my hand and letting guys make plays happen. It just proves that if you make the throws, that the offense can be productive and can have the progress that we want. I just gotta go out and make the plays happen.”
That's valid to an extent, but it's not like he's been given an easy hand to play with.
Jawaan Taylor leads the league in penalties again, and there's only so much you can do when you're constantly going backwards. Run-blocking and pass-protection have been issues as well, and they clearly miss receivers Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice.
Still, this is what leaders do. The Chiefs don't look as explosive as they used to, and Mahomes will gladly take the blame rather than throwing anybody under the bus.
Perhaps a matchup with the Baltimore Ravens' bottom-feeding defense is just what this team needs to get the offense in a rhythm again.
