A Wednesday report indicated that quarterback Justin Fields would return to the New York Jets' starting lineup for the upcoming "Monday Night Football" game at the 0-3 Miami Dolphins as long as Fields cleared the NFL's concussion protocol in time for that contest.
On Thursday, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed that's the case when he revealed that Fields would be participating in non-contact drills while still in the protocol.
"If he's cleared, he's the starter," Glenn said about Fields, per Rich Cimini of ESPN.
Some speculated ahead of the Jets' Week 3 game at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that backup Tyrod Taylor could essentially play himself into the QB1 gig via a solid performance. While he completed 26-of-36 passes for 197 yards with two touchdowns against Tampa Bay, Taylor also tossed a costly interception that was taken to the house for a score with under 20 seconds remaining in the first half.
In the end, a walk-off field goal dropped the Jets to 0-3 on the season.
Fields produced a mixed bag of results over his first two games with the Jets. While he accounted for three touchdowns (one passing, two rushing) in New York's Week 1 home defeat against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he then completed just 3-of-11 passes for 27 yards before he suffered a concussion in the Week 2 30-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
On Wednesday, NFL insider Dan Graziano of ESPN shared that he'd been led to believe Fields' recovery from his latest setback hadn't "been easy." Glenn suggested that the extra day has the 26-year-old on track to play at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium.
"He still has to go through the whole protocol before he's totally cleared, but I like where he's at," Glenn added about Fields.
After Glenn offered his update, ESPN BET had the Jets as 2.5-point road underdogs against the winless Dolphins. A healthy Fields is clearly Glenn's first choice for the Miami game, but it's fair to wonder what the Jets would do if the signal-caller has a rough outing in front of a prime-time television audience.
