The New York Giants’ decision to bench Russell Wilson in favor of Jaxson Dart appears to be a popular one in the team’s locker room.
Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported Saturday that members of the Giants were “fired up” by the quarterback change. Multiple players on both sides of the ball, including some offensive and defensive captains, were quick to text Dart to tell him that they are fully behind him.
Dart continues to receive rave reviews behind the scenes. The coaching staff believes he is more than ready to start, and one Giants source told Russini that the quarterback has a “legit chance of being great.”
Wilson undoubtedly commands a great deal of respect in the Giants’ locker room. However, aside from one good game against the Dallas Cowboys, he had not really shown he could lead the team consistently to wins. Fans had already started to turn on him, and while the locker room was presumably more supportive, one can understand why they would also embrace the change.
The Giants are 0-3 heading into a tough matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. At this point, the team will likely embrace anything that could turn their luck around.
