After 161 games, there are division titles, a playoff spot and postseason positioning up for grabs on the final day of the 2025 MLB regular season. Entering the weekend, it was pretty chaotic, but over the past two days, the playoff picture is a little clearer.
So what is on the line Sunday?
First, let's go through what has been decided.
All three National League division races are settled, with the Milwaukee Brewers winning the Central, Philadelphia Phillies taking the East and Los Angeles Dodgers capturing the West. Two of the three NL wild-card spots have been claimed by the Chicago Cubs and the San Diego Padres. The Brewers have also clinched home-field advantage through the World Series.
Over in the American League, only the Seattle Mariners (West) have won a division. The Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers have secured playoff spots, with the Red Sox going in as a wild card.
That leaves one NL wild-card spot, two AL divisions and two AL wild-card berths undecided — although that last one comes with caveats. Reminder, all of Sunday's games start at basically the same time (3:05 p.m.-3:20 p.m. ET), setting the stage for more drama.
After the Houston Astros lost to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday, the Guardians and Tigers only needed a win or an Astros loss to punch their postseason ticket. They took the better route and won, with the Guardians beating the Texas Rangers 3-2 on a walk-off hit by pitch and the Tigers edging the Red Sox 2-1. So both are in, and the Astros were eliminated before the postseason for the first time since 2016. Now, it comes down to Sunday, with the Guardians having the tiebreaker over the Tigers. A Guardians win or a Tigers loss gives Cleveland the Central title. The Tigers need to win and have the Guardians lose to take the Central. If the Guardians win the division, it would cap a remarkable comeback from a 15½-game deficit on July 8.
The @CleGuardians had a 2.9% chance of making the playoffs on September 4th. It’s 100% right now! #CLINCHED

The Jays hold the tiebreaker over the Yankees, so if Toronto beats the Tampa Bay Rays, it takes the East title and the Yankees are the No. 1 AL wild card regardless of what New York does against the Baltimore Orioles. If both teams lose, the Jays are East champs and the Yankees are a wild card. The only path for the Yankees to win the division is by beating the Orioles and the Jays losing.
Whoever doesn't win the AL Central and AL East will be wild cards. The second-place team from the East will be the No. 1 wild card and host the No. 2 wild card. If the Tigers beat the Red Sox but are the wild card, Detroit would be the No. 2 wild card based on owning the tiebreaker over Boston. The Guardians would be the No. 3 wild card if they don't win the Central.
Following wins on Saturday, the Reds and Mets remain deadlocked for the final NL wild card. The Reds will try to sweep the Brewers, while the Mets will try to avoid the same fate they had in 2007 and 2008 when they were eliminated on the final day of the regular season by the Marlins. The Reds hold the tiebreaker, so Cincinnati gets in with a win or a Mets loss. Whoever it is will face the defending World Series champion Dodgers in an NL Wild Card Series. Missing the playoffs would be a hugely disappointing finish for the Mets, who have the second-largest payroll in MLB following the signing of Juan Soto.
