Five takeaways from CFB Week 5: A stunner in State College

Week 5 personified what college football is all about. It started with an insane field storming Friday night and was capped with a pair of must-watch games involving four of the nation's best teams.

There's plenty to unpack. Here are five takeaways from the week that was.

Alabama is back

Exhale, 'Bama fans. The Tide's Week 1 loss at Florida State might have just been a bad week and nothing more. No. 17 Alabama (3-1, 1-0) reminded everyone who it is with a 24-21 win at No. 5 Georgia (3-1, 1-1).

Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson continued a run of good play, throwing for 276 yards and two touchdowns, while adding another score on the ground. Georgia relied on its ground game, compiling 227 yards and holding Alabama scoreless in the second half. It didn't matter, though, as the Tide defeated UGA for the third straight time.

The win snapped Georgia's 33-game home winning streak, which was the longest active streak in the nation.

A Big Ten thriller...and an all-too-familiar result for Penn State

No. 3 Penn State (3-1, 0-1) versus No. 6 Oregon (5-0, 2-0) lived up to the hype. After a sluggish first half that ended 6-6, the Ducks prevailed 30-24 in double overtime. It's familiar territory for James Franklin and Penn State.

Franklin is now 4-21 against top 10 teams in his Penn State tenure. While that story will dominate the headlines, Oregon's performance is worthy of all the praise. Quarterback Dante Moore continued to impress, finishing 29-for-39 for 248 yards and three touchdowns.

The Ducks are now 4-1 against Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State since joining the Big Ten last season.

SEC earns statement wins

It was a telling weekend in the SEC with several important matchups across the conference. The biggest statement belonged to Alabama. No. 9 Texas A&M (4-0, 1-0) stuffed Auburn, limiting the Tigers to just 125 yards passing and 52 yards rushing.

No. 13 Ole Miss (5-0, 3-0) has looked strong after two close games to open SEC play. The Rebels shut down No. 4 LSU, holding the Tigers to 57 yards rushing and 2-for-11 on third down. It appears Brian Kelly will continue getting questions about his offense.

No. 15 Tennessee (4-1, 1-1) escaped in overtime, 41-34, at Mississippi State (4-1, 0-1), which was a huge win for the Vols, but perhaps an even bigger statement for MSU. The Bulldogs look like a legitimate threat. While they most likely won't contend for the conference title, it's a good bet they'll shake up the league with a big win or two.

A beatdown in Fayetteville

Notre Dame (2-2) looked every bit of a College Football Playoff team in a 56-13 win at Arkansas (2-3). Quarterback CJ Carr was lights out, finishing 22-for-30 for 354 yards and four touchdowns. The Irish gained 210 yards on the ground and scored 42 points in the first half.

While the offense was impressive, the defense needed a performance like Saturday's. The Irish had been allowing 32.7 points per game (119th in NCAA) and 398.7 yards per game (101st in NCAA). Against Arkansas, Notre Dame allowed 365 yards and did not allow a point in the second half. Arkansas' offense came in ranked eighth in the country.

It's time to talk about Virginia

The Cavaliers (4-1, 2-0) took down No. 8 Florida State Friday night, and it's time to discuss whether or not Virginia is a legitimate CFP threat. The offense is explosive, ranking fifth nationally (564.5 yards per game) coming into the game, and UVA has scored at least 46 points in all four wins.

The schedule for the rest of the way is favorable. Virginia does not play Miami, Clemson, Georgia Tech or SMU.
