Penn State has a James Franklin problem, and Franklin has a Drew Allar problem.
Franklin put all of his faith in the former No. 1 QB from the 2022 recruiting class.
Allar was a five-star quarterback from Ohio, whom Ohio State didn't really recruit or care about losing to Penn State.
Four years later, actually well before that, it was clear to see why. Saturday night's 30-24 overtime loss to Oregon just reinforced it.
Allar is the reason Penn State lost a game between two great teams. Penn State is a great team. It just doesn't have a great quarterback.
At least not good enough to win a national championship, a Big Ten championship, or anything of significance.
Penn State reached the semifinals of the College Football Playoff last season, but in the two playoff wins, Allar completed 52 percent of his passes and averaged just 149 yards per game.
Against Oregon, in a white-out game, Penn State had three points after three quarters. Allar had 62 yards passing before leading Penn State to back-to-back touchdown drives.
However, Penn State scored those points as much by running the ball and with misdirection as they did with Allar throwing the ball. He did have a touchdown pass to cut Oregon's lead to seven in the fourth quarter.
Yet, the former five-star completed just 14 of 25 passes for 137 yards. He had two touchdown passes, but his interception in overtime, which ended the game, was inexcusable.

Todd Blackledge, the NBC color analyst, said Allar tried to make the "perfect throw."
On the replay, it was clear that Allar was throwing into coverage. The pass was also woefully underthrown.
It had zero chance of being completed, which isn't surprising after a season — and a career — of misfires, at least in the biggest games.
Saturday night's showing and the pass that ended the game only reinforced that Allar simply isn't up to the task of taking Penn State football where it wants to go.
