Pete Alonso wastes no time in making huge decision on Mets future

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso did not even let the bitter taste of the 2025 season leave his mouth before making a massive decision on his future with the team. Just minutes after the Mets' humiliating season came to an end on Sunday evening, Alonso informed the New York media he would be opting out of his contract and re-entering the free agent market this winter.

Alonso should still have robust market this winter

Following a drawn-out free agent saga last winter, Alonso eventually re-signed with the Mets — the only Major League franchise he has ever known — on a two-year, $54M contract in February that included an opt-out after the first year.

Had he not opted out he would have been set to make $24M in 2026.

While the Mets' season ended up in the dumpster, Alonso himself had another strong year at the plate with 38 home runs and an .871 OPS that placed him 11th among qualified hitters across Major League Baseball.

That OPS was not only nearly .100 points higher than what he did in 2024, it was also his highest single-season OPS since his rookie season. If he was able to land a two-year, $54M contract a year ago, it stands to reason that he should be able to get an even bigger contract this offseason coming off of an even better season.

The only question is whether or not that contract will come from the Mets or another team.

Alonso's 38 home runs this season give him 264 home runs for his career, placing him on top of the Mets' all-time leaderboard.
