Insider reveals Maple Leafs' plan to replace Mitch Marner

The Toronto Maple Leafs have apparently chosen a solution for the void left by Mitch Marner, at least provisionally.

According to Sportsnet's insider Luke Fox, Max Domi will start on Toronto's first line as a right winger, alongside Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies in the Oct. 8 opener.

"A surprise injury or trade could still affect the landscape, but expect this group to dress for Thursday’s rehearsal versus the Detroit Red Wings, then rest up for Oct. 8’s home opener," Fox wrote, after sharing his projected lineup:

  • Knies – Matthews – Domi
  • Bobby McMann – John Tavares – William Nylander
  • Dakota Joshua – Nicolas Roy – Matias Maccelli
  • Steven Lorentz – Scott Laughton – Easton Cowan

Max Domi as the Maple Leafs' Marner solution makes sense

Toronto was looking for a right winger for the first line. Matias Maccelli seemed to be an option, but Domi, 30, might have earned the first trial with Matthews and Knies.

Recently, coach Craig Berube explained what he expects from Domi and pointed out that he has asked him to be more aggressive, shoot more, and not limit himself to always looking for his teammates.

This decision makes sense because Domi will fit as a connector. The 30-year-old can receive and release quickly, attack the slot, and carry the puck. This suits Matthews, who is an elite finisher, while Knies provides size and puck recovery. Knies wins duels, Domi speeds up decisions, and Matthews capitalizes.

Marner was a playmaker who organized long possessions. Domi favors direct rhythms and quick decisions. Although not similar, in the regular season that simplicity can elevate the five-on-five pace, increase high-danger attempts, and reduce dead times in offensive zones. Everything points to a more vertical version of the Maple Leafs.

Furthermore, it makes sense because Matthews and Domi already played together last season. Avoiding major experiments can maintain existing chemistry and stability, especially at the start.

While Domi starts, this can allow Berube to test Maccelli on the third lines and in situational roles. Tactically, and in the medium and long term, it seems a coherent decision by the Leafs' staff.
