Eagles star WR clears the air on frustrations about role

Even though the Philadelphia Eagles are 4-0 and are slowly firing on all cylinders, it hasn’t come without its fair share of drama.

It started with "Spitgate," when defensive tackle Jalen Carter spat on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, which led to his ejection and not playing a snap in the game. It unfolded into the latest fodder for the media, speculation on whether star WR A.J. Brown is happy in Philadelphia or not.

Brown tweeted after Sunday's victory against the Tampa Buccaneers, "If you’re not welcomed, not listened to, quietly withdraw. Don’t make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and be on your way."

This gives the impression he wanted out of Philadelphia. Brown would later delete this tweet. The WR finished the game against the Buccaneers with two receptions for seven yards.

A.J. Brown takes "accountability" for his tweet

Brown took "accountability" for his tweet when meeting with the media on Wednesday, but expressed that he wants the ball in pressure situations and when the game is on the line.

"Like, again, I take accountability for that, you know?" Brown said about the tweet he posted on Sunday. "But I think it’s fair to, you know, to want the ball to get us going, you know? Like last week against the Rams, you know, I caught the sluggo [route], got the offense going, next play, open up for Dallas Goedert. The safety came over to my side and opened it up. So, you know, I don’t think it’s a bad thing for wanting the ball. It’s not just for targets or anything, or put numbers up, but no, I see that that we’re struggling and I’m a guy that wants to ball in those times, when we can’t find a way, give it to me. Like, when the game’s on the line, give the ball to me. I want that. I want that pressure, I put it on myself, you know, and I work hard for it. . . . [M]y teammates know that when the game’s on the line, look at me, you know? And I want, shoot, everybody in the stadium to know that, you know? That’s not a secret, you know? I’m not shying away from that. And so that’s when you see that frustration and that hunger comes out, and I see you struggling, and I believe it, you give the ball to me, I’m gonna open up things, and I’m gonna get this thing going. You can put it on my back."

A.J. Brown is still a key part of the Eagles offense

Brown hasn’t had the offensive season he’s wanted, but he still is a key member of the offense and one of QB Jalen Hurts' best weapons. Brown’s only touchdown this season came during the Rams game in Week 3, with under three minutes left in the third quarter, to help get the Eagles within a touchdown, making the score 26-21. Brown would finish the game with 109 yards on six receptions.

Brown shouldn’t be too frustrated, as his fellow receiver, DeVonta Smith, has similar statistics across the board: 158 yards and one touchdown on 17 receptions. Star RB Saquon Barkley is not performing much better, having 237 yards on 77 carries and three touchdowns.

The focus of opposing defenses is to stop Barkley and pressure Hurts to make a play. Brown has to do his part to get open early to give Hurts the best look before he scrambles. The Eagles still have a lot of season left, and Brown and Hurts still have time to get on the same page to help get Brown the touches he desires.
