Brandin Podziemski is entering his third season in the NBA. He's already established himself as a key member of Steve Kerr's rotation, often splitting time between the starting lineup and second unit.
After impressing during his rookie year, Podziemski endured some ups and downs last season. He was forced to adjust to additional defensive attention and the Warriors' increased tempo of play. Nevertheless, Podziemski found ways to contribute on both sides of the floor.
When speaking to the media following the Golden State Warriors' first practice session of the preseason, head coach Steve Kerr tipped Podziemski to have a big season.
"I think this is a year where he takes another step," Kerr said. "To be able to get through that crucible where you’re in the starting lineup, you’re in the playoffs, spotlight’s on you, you have a few bad shooting nights. Every player goes through that. He’s a tough guy and a tough player. I just think he’s on a very natural progression to continue his improvement."
Young players are often expected to show a developmental jump in Year 3. They've added two years of NBA experience, have begun to understand and address the gaps in their game and are growing into their frames. Therefore, if Podziemski is going to take another step forward, this season would be the most logical.
During his own media availability, Podziemski shared his thoughts on one key area that could help take him to another level.
"I think [the] big thing to show another leap would be emotional maturity," Podziemski told reporters Tuesday after being told what Kerr said. "Talking to the refs is included in that. But, just keeping a composure about myself so that my teammates see that."
Podziemski's exposure to a veteran environment in the Warriors locker room is having a positive effect. He's 22 years old and is already understanding the need to control his emotions.
Podziemski will likely have the opportunity to contend for an increased role this season. His improvements, both in terms of skill and approach, will play a part in how big a role he can command. With the Warriors' primary rotation all in their mid-to-late 30s, he has a chance to emerge as the star of the future. Clearly, Kerr has faith in Podziemski's abilities. Now, he must showcase his skills once the season gets underway.
