Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews endorses choice to replace Mitch Marner

The Toronto Maple Leafs have found the ideal replacement for Mitch Marner, backed by Craig Berube, and now by another important player.

Auston Matthews praised Max Domi, who will join him with Matthew Knies on the top line, describing him as an easy player to play with, highlighting his patience and vision.

"He’s really patient with the puck," Matthews said, via TSN. “He’s really good at drawing guys in and finding lanes. He can pass on his forehand, he can pass on his backhand, and he’s really strong on the puck. He wins battles, and he’s able to find areas.

"My experience playing with him, I just try to support him and get open, and I have to be ready at all times because the puck can come whenever. He’s a really easy player to play with. He’s got a great brain and is super smart out there, and he’s a great, great passer," he added.

Berube seems to have decided that Domi, 30, will have a crucial role — at least to start the season — and it makes sense.

While Matthews, 28, is an elite shooter who optimizes short windows, Domi is a patient passer who attracts coverage and opens lanes. That dynamic is key because it creates time and space for Matthews' release.

Domi also handles pressure well and plays inside, while Matthews thrives on passes from less obvious places. Domi's versatility increases the unpredictability of Toronto's offense.

With Knies, 22, as a third piece who attacks the weak side and recovers, Domi could set up triangles and Matthews would be in position for a one-timer.

Berube wants Domi to shoot more. This could complicate the role, but it could also mean that if the forward threatens with his own shot, the defense could not overload Matthews.

If Domi balances his passes and shots, playing inside and keeping his patience, Matthews will have more clean looks, making both players compatible — and it's a good call by Berube.
