Giants DL suggests teammate could be NFL's best pass-rusher

New York Giants pass-rusher Brian Burns averaged over one sack per game across the first four weeks of the ongoing season.

During a recent chat with Tom Rock of Newsday, defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches hinted that he and others inside the Giants locker room aren't surprised by how Burns performed over those September contests.

Brian Burns made a statement across New York Giants' first four games

"There were certain attributes he already had — length, great athleticism, but then when he put that work ethic with it, that’s when it got scary," Nunez-Roches said about Burns. "I don’t know what clicked in his head or if he felt like somebody was over him last year that he felt shouldn’t have been over him. Or maybe he just felt, 'Bro, this is my year to claim that I am the best pass-rusher in the league.'"

Burns made 17 starts with the Giants last season but dealt with groin, ankle and Achilles issues throughout the campaign. Per ESPN stats, he and Byron Young of the Los Angeles Rams currently share the league lead for total sacks (five) heading into Sunday's NFL action.

The Giants' front four of Burns, rookie Abdul Carter, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Dexter Lawrence recorded 27 pressures against Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert in New York's 21-18 Week 4 win. Per Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com, Burns tallied four quarterback hits, seven pressures and a sack in that victory.

"From the start of (organized team activities) throughout camp, you could tell he was pressing with a purpose," Nunez-Roches added about Burns. "He was the fastest guy. He’s the most focused. Every rush felt like it was going to get us to where we wanted to go, to the Super Bowl, the playoffs, and now it’s just jumping off the screen."

Brian Burns has embraced a "different process"

Burns spoke with Rock about how putting in extra work behind the scenes during midweeks has helped the 27-year-old produce positive results on Sundays.

"It’s a different process," Burns explained. "I am focusing on how it looks more than being based on the stats. I’m looking at how I’m playing more than the sacks. I like the sacks, don’t get me wrong, but at the same time, I want the way I look, how I’m playing, to look a certain way. I understand every play isn’t going to look that way, but I just want more plays to look like that than don’t."

As of Friday afternoon, ESPN BET had the 1-3 Giants as 2.5-point underdogs for this Sunday's game at the 0-4 New Orleans Saints. With star wide receiver Malik Nabers sidelined due to a season-ending torn ACL, Big Blue may need Burns and Co. to be a wrecking crew for the visitors to leave Louisiana with a win.
