NHL insider shares promising news on Conor Sheary's future with Rangers

The New York Rangers have entered a rebuilding stage after Mike Sullivan's arrival as coach and some key moves.

A roster novelty is Conor Sheary, who came to training camp on a PTO and has performed well in the preseason, with three points (one goal, two assists) in three games.

The Athletic's Vincent Z. Mercogliano shared good news for Sheary, 33, estimating he has done enough to earn a contract, and assures the team's staff sees him as a third-line left winger.

"Meanwhile, it looks like the Rangers are leaning toward Sheary as their third-line left wing,” Mercogliano said. "The 33-year-old came to camp on a PTO and has played his way into a likely deal, with three points (one goal and two assists) through three preseason appearances and a speedy forechecking game that Sullivan is quite familiar with from their time together in Pittsburgh."

How Conor Sheary fits into the Rangers' system

Sullivan profiles Sheary in the bottom-six, with potential to move up to the top-six if needed. The coach values his stick, puck pursuit and positional detail.

Sheary fits the system as an aggressive forecheck with smart routes. He helps sustain offensive zone cycles and forces turnovers, which is key for energy lines. He has an active stick and good reading, making interceptions and knockdowns that shorten rival breakouts and create short attacking possessions.

The winger has good positional detail, meaning good back-pressure and wall coverage, minimizing defensive transition risks. Sheary doesn't depend on usage volume and can contribute five-on-five points through "dirty work" and quick coordination.

If he plays on a third line, as estimated, he can complement a defensively responsible center and a shooting right winger, providing recovery and first passes.

On the second power-play unit, he can receive and distribute from the half-wall, cutting passing lanes for second chances, without a stellar role.

Some Rangers fans expected better or more expensive offseason moves, but with a good tactical approach, Sullivan has the squad to build a balanced and competitive team.
