Myles Garrett makes bold claim about Browns QB Dillon Gabriel ahead of first NFL start

The Cleveland Browns are preparing to start the quarterback that hardly anyone is talking about on Sunday. And one extremely noteworthy person has something to say about Dillon Gabriel.

While fans and media are obsessing over where Shedeur Sanders is listed on the depth chart and what he says, or doesn't say for that matter, Browns' star defensive end Myles Garrett offered his assessment of his team's new starting quarterback on Friday.

“He runs the offense like this is his offense. He looks like he's been doing it for years," said Garrett, per NFL reporter and Browns play-by-play Andrew Siciliano.

Garrett's claim came following several practices with Gabriel leading the first team offense.

Now, of course, despite his standing as an elite defensive player, Garrett doesn't play offense. But Garrett has also watched as much quarterback film as anyone in an effort to study tendencies and have success going against them.

Garrett also isn't the type of person to say something unless he truly believes it, so his comments should be taken as seriously as anything from any of Gabriel's teammates can be before the game, a game that is his chance to prove he should be the future of the franchise, not Sanders and not any rookie they may draft before next season.

Gabriel, who the Browns selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Oregon, was cast into the starting role after a rough outing in Cleveland's 34-10 loss to Detroit last Sunday. NFL veteran Joe Flacco, brought back to Cleveland to open the season as the starter and help mentor the rookies, completed just 16-of-34 passes for 184 yards. To make matters worse, Flacco threw two costly interceptions.

In four games, Flacco threw for 815 yards while completing just 58.1% of his passes. Flacco's touchdown-to-interception ratio was the main problem - he threw two touchdowns to six picks and posted a QBR of 27.2.

And with a 1-3 record and the season slipping away, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski decided to get a look at Gabriel. But the length of Gabriel's leash is unclear. Most expect Sanders to eventually earn his chance at some point - he's still only the QB3 on the depth chart, but it's also possible Gabriel could keep the reins if he lives up to this newfound hype from Garrett.
