There was a lot of anticipation surrounding six-time Super Bowl champion head coach Bill Belichick and North Carolina coming into the college football season.
Saturday's 38-10 loss to Clemson — a program coming off back-to-back losses — was just the latest of North Carolina's early-season struggles.
An inability to convert on third down (2-of-11) and a lack of a run game (57 yards) once again held North Carolina back. Aside from a field goal on its first possession, North Carolina punted on its next five possessions and could not get any momentum going.
It was over before the game really got going as well. This 45-yard TD from Clemson tight end Christian Bentancur gave the Tigers a 21-3 lead as part of a 28-3 first quarter against the Tar Heels.

It was the third time in as many losses that North Carolina has allowed 30 or more points this season. Clemson QB Cade Klubnik, who has had a slow start to the season, was 22-of-24 for 254 yards and four TDs, having no issue moving the ball against the Tar Heels defense.
In all three of the Tar Heels' losses so far, slow starts have prevented them from really having a chance. Although North Carolina scored on its opening drive against TCU, it fell behind 20-7 at the half and could not overcome the deficit.
After consecutive wins over Charlotte and Richmond, North Carolina trailed 20-3 at the half to UCF. With Saturday's 28-point first-quarter outburst from Clemson, the Tar Heels continue to put themselves at a disadvantage, primarily due to a lack of execution on third down and a run game that ranks 127th in the country (87.7 YPG). A porous defense that is tied for 81st (28.3 PPG) does not help, either.
North Carolina's start to ACC play started about the same as its season did against TCU. While it does not have to face No. 3 Miami or No. 18 Florida State this season, it is hard to see another game on its schedule where a win is a given.
It was hard to know what to expect from the Tar Heels as Belichick made the transition to the collegiate level. Through five games and his first foray into ACC play, the struggles are clear as this team continues to disappoint each week.
