Shane van Gisbergen wins NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at Charlotte Roval

As Shane van Gisbergen drove away and easily scored his fifth victory of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season, the battle raged on behind him for the final transfer spots in the penultimate round of the Cup Series playoffs.

Van Gisbergen maintained a steady gap over the likes of Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell in the closing laps to hold on and win at the Charlotte Roval for the first time in his career.

Van Gisbergen had to hold off multiple advances from Larson and Bell in Stage 3 to maintain the lead.

Playoff spotlight was on Ross Chastain and Joey Logano

Behind van Gisbergen, the spotlight was on Ross Chastain and defending Cup Series champion Joey Logano, who were furiously battling for the final spot in the Round of 8 field.

Logano was on fresher tires in the closing laps, and as Chastain slipped, Logano moved above the cut line. Logano advanced via a tiebreaker, joining Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott, Larson, Bell, William Byron, Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe in the Round of 8.

Chastain attempted a last-ditch effort on the final lap, spinning Denny Hamlin in the frontstretch chicane to no avail.

Along with Logano, Bubba Wallace, Tyler Reddick and Austin Cindric were eliminated from playoff contention.

Larson, Bell, Chris Buescher and Michael McDowell rounded out the top five, with Ryan Preece, Daniel Suarez, Elliott, AJ Allmendinger and Reddick completing the top 10.

Other notable finishers include Byron in 11th, Blaney in 13th, Briscoe in 14th, Wallace in 15th, Logano in 20th, Chastain in 21st, Hamlin in 23rd and Cindric in 37th.

The Round of 8 will begin at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sept. 12.
