During the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, Bryson DeChambeau’s caddie, Gregory Bodine, was involved in a dispute.
It started on the 16th green when Justin Rose asked Bodine to move out of his line of sight while he was setting up a putt. The incident escalated on the walk to the 17th hole during DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler’s fourball match against Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose.
After that, things got heated. DeChambeau and Bodine voiced their complaints to Rose and Fleetwood as they made their way to the next green.
The situation grew even more tense when Scheffler’s caddie Ted Scott, Europe’s vice-captain Francesco Molinari, and Fleetwood’s caddie Ian Finnis also became involved.
The dust eventually settled, with Rose and Fleetwood coming out on top in a win that played an important role in Team Europe’s dramatic 15-13 victory.
Days after the tournament, Bodine shared his thoughts on the event via social media.
Just a day after his incident with Fleetwood, DeChambeau played a key role in Team USA’s comeback effort. Despite being five down to Matt Fitzpatrick in Sunday singles, he managed to fight back and secure half a point for Keegan Bradley’s side.
“A week to remember for me in so many ways.
“I love that my family was able to be there, thankful for my country, and you must know by now that you can never count @brysondechambeau out, no matter what the circumstances.
“Love my brothers who went to battle this week together,” he posted on Instagram.
Bodine found himself in more than one heated moment during the weekend, but it would be harsh to pin much of that on him, given how charged the atmosphere already was.
Still, he can look back on the week feeling good about how DeChambeau performed under pressure.
DeChambeau finished the Ryder Cup with a 1-3-1 record, but that does not really reflect his impact on Team USA. He was one of the driving forces behind the team’s energy at Bethpage Black, though he did not always get much help from his partners.
Despite the 32-year-old playing well in Friday’s foursomes, Justin Thomas’ poor performance led to Team USA’s first loss of the tournament. They were defeated by Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton.
DeChambeau’s toughest defeat came later that afternoon alongside Ben Griffin in what was his first of two losses to Fleetwood and Rose. Even so, he showed plenty of determination to secure a crucial half-point in singles play on Sunday.
His handling of Saturday’s confrontation could have been better, but overall, the California native may have been Team USA’s most important player over the weekend.
