NFL panic meter: Why Eagles OC Kevin Patullo should worry and Bills should not

There are no more undefeated teams in the NFL, and the contender picture is muddier than we expected heading into the season. Here's where four preseason Super Bowl contenders stand on the panic meter through five weeks. (Ratings are on a 10-point scale, with "1" a concern and "10" a full-blown panic.)

Baltimore Ravens

Panic meter rating: 9.5/10

When the Ravens are fully healthy and humming on offense, it's hard to put any roster ahead of them. The product they rolled out in Week 5, however, might be the worst team in the NFL.

With quarterback Lamar Jackson, left tackle Ronnie Stanley, safety Kyle Hamilton and a dozen other players out with injuries, Baltimore lost to the Houston Texans, 44-10. Backup QB Cooper Rush threw three interceptions in the loss, and the banged-up defense gave up 6.3 yards per play and ranked last in the NFL in success rate allowed (60.3 percent). The Ravens are 1-4 and 7.5-point underdogs at home against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 6, and there's no guarantee any of their stars will be available Sunday.

"We have to get our s--- together," Baltimore outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy said, per Jamison Hensley of ESPN. "Just being brutally honest. Coaches can give us the plays, but we have to execute."

Philadelphia Eagles OC Kevin Patullo

Panic meter rating: 5.5/10

Philadelphia's offense can't put together a full game in 2025. After taking a 17-3 lead early in the third quarter, the Eagles managed just eight total yards in their next four drives to allow the Denver Broncos to secure a 21-17 comeback win in Week 5. Patullo inexplicably called 23 pass plays and only one designed run in the second half, and RB Saquon Barkley finished the game with just six carries. Barkley, who rushed for 2,005 yards last season, is on pace for only 908 this season.

On Monday, Fox Sports' Kevin Cowherd criticized Eagles coaching. "The players were great last year," he said. "What did they do, all eat Twinkies in the offseason?"

Through five weeks, Philadelphia's offense ranks 30th in the NFL in yards per game (261.6), 29th in yards per rush (3.5) and 25th in dropback success rate (44.7 percent). There's enough evidence to say Patullo is in over his head.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon

Panic meter rating: 7.5/10

There probably won't be a worse loss this season than the disaster from the Cardinals in Week 5. After building a 21-3 lead in the third quarter, Arizona gave up 19 unanswered points and let the Tennessee Titans steal its first win of 2025.

The Cardinals were plagued by careless mistakes, untimely penalties and conservative play-calling — all of which fall squarely on the head coach. Gannon is 14-25 as the Cardinals HC. If Arizona doesn't make the playoffs, Gannon could be looking for a new job next offseason.

Buffalo Bills

Panic meter rating: 1.5/10

In Week 5 at home against New England, Buffalo lost 23-20, its first loss of the season, but there's no reason for Bills Mafia to panic. The Bills still rank first in the NFL in offensive EPA per play (0.194), third in points per game (30.3) and fourth in offensive success rate (49.2 percent) through five games.

As long as QB Josh Allen is healthy, this team should be able to compete for the No. 1 seed in the AFC. We'll learn a lot about the Bills in the next few weeks, as three of their next five games come against postseason contenders: at the Atlanta Falcons (2-2, Oct. 13), vs. the Kansas City Chiefs (2-2, Nov. 2) and vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-1, Nov. 16). They also play at the Carolina Panthers (2-3, Oct. 26) and at the Miami Dolphins (1-4, Nov. 9).
