Aaron Glenn made New York Jets history by becoming the first head coach of the franchise to lose his first five games in charge when the club suffered a 37-22 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys (2-2-1) on Sunday afternoon.
While speaking with reporters after the game, Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson insisted he still believes Glenn is the right man to help the team turn things around.
"No one expected this," Wilson directly said about the Jets' 0-5 record, per Antwan Staley of the New York Daily News. "I’m not going to say this is what new coaches go through, but I still have that faith that we are going to be better off for it. I feel like we are all building something in our locker room leading up to Sundays every week, and we are not coming out winning the games on Sundays, which isn’t okay. But the foundation is there, and we are going to keep building upon this thing. It is just about executing when you need it most. This is what this thing comes down to. It’s about us. Being at our best when it’s required. That’s gotta be the mindset."
Gang Green lost the turnover battle to the tune of 1-0 against Dallas. ESPN's Rich Cimini and The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt pointed out that the 2025 Jets are the first team in NFL history since turnovers became an official stat in 1933 to have not tallied a single takeaway in the first five games of a campaign. Most disheartening about Sunday's result for the Jets was the fact that the game essentially ended once the Cowboys built a 30-3 lead with 4:33 remaining in the third quarter.
Following the Dolphins game, Jets cornerback Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner complained that he gets "called for more stuff just based off of us not winning" regarding penalties. On Sunday, Gardner allowed the 43-yard touchdown pass to Dallas' George Pickens in the third quarter that sent many fans of the home team to the exits.
"It’s hard to process," Gardner said after the Jets' latest loss. "It keeps me up at night trying to process some stuff. I try to think of the good through all of this because it is hard for me to sleep, trying to see why we are not winning. Every time something going good for us, something bad gotta [happen]. We take one step and then we take two steps back. It really has been tough trying to pinpoint what it really is. That’s why I can’t process it at all."
Gardner and Co. will need to rest up for their upcoming trip to London, where they will face the 3-2 Denver Broncos at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this coming Sunday. As of Monday morning, ESPN BET had the Jets as 7.5-point underdogs for that game. Meanwhile, Jets quarterback Justin Fields voiced positivity even though no NFL team has ever made the playoffs after losing its first five games of a season.
"There is a first time for everything, brother," Fields explained.
