After losing their franchise quarterback, Joe Burrow, to an injury, the Cincinnati Bengals have been one of the worst offenses in the NFL and don't seem to be turning that around anytime soon.
With two of the top wide receivers in the league, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, backup quarterback Jake Browning should have no problem keeping the Bengals in contention, but that has not happened. The Bengals have an opportunity to make a run in the AFC North.
The Baltimore Ravens have a historically bad defense and have Lamar Jackson out due to a hamstring injury, while the Cleveland Browns are their usual selves. The Pittsburgh Steelers are the Bengals' only competition to win the division. Sitting at 2-3 and playing the 2-1-1 Green Bay Packers in Week 6, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor could consider a change at quarterback, as Browning has not gotten the job done since taking the reins as the starter.
Having his third game in four where he threw two or more interceptions, Browning failed to limit his turnovers against the Lions in Week 5 with three picks. All of Browning's touchdowns came in the fourth quarter when the Bengals were down, per ESPN’s Ben Baby, which could prompt Taylor to remove Browning at quarterback.
"After a game like that, we're going to look at all personnel to make sure we're doing the right thing," Taylor said when asked if he still believes in Browning moving forward. "I won't shy away from that because it's a very fair question after the amount of turnovers that we had."
Throwing eight interceptions and taking nine sacks, Browning has proved he isn't the answer the Bengals need if they're to turn things around. Browning’s best season came in 2023 when he threw for 1,936 yards and 12 touchdowns, but had seven interceptions, which he's surpassed.
As the Nov. 4 trade deadline fast approaches, there is still hope for the Bengals to acquire someone to help turn things around, with two quarterbacks available on the trade market. The New York Giants' Russell Wilson and the Atlanta Falcons’ Kirk Cousins would be two viable options for the Bengals, with both relegated to the bench.
Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart came in for Wilson after three games and has Jameis Winston as his backup, making Wilson the third-string quarterback. Michael Penix Jr. took over for Cousins, who has been available since last season, but no team has been willing to take on his salary.
Signed for two more seasons and owed $70 million on top of his $27.5 million owed for this season, the Bengals have the cap space available to take on Cousins' salary. However, with Cousins having a no-trade clause and the Bengals unlikely to take on that much money, Wilson could be a more viable option. Any team acquiring Wilson, per CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones, will only owe the QB $2 million.
