Edmonton Oilers center Leon Draisaitl joined elite company on Wednesday night when his goal in the second period of a 4-3 shootout loss to the Calgary Flames made him the 11th active NHL player to reach 400 career goals.

In doing so, he joined Alexander Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, Steven Stamkos, Evgeni Malkin, John Tavares, Patrick Kane, Corey Perry, Anze Kopitar, Brad Marchand and Auston Matthews.

On the power play in the second period, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins whipped the puck down to David Tomasek, who sent a no-look pass across the crease to a wide open Draisaitl, who made no mistake to give Edmonton a 3-0 lead at the time and make history in the process.

Draisaitl, the No. 3 overall pick from the 2014 NHL Draft, now has 958 career points in 791 games played. At his current career goal scoring pace, he would need about another 200 games to reach the 500 mark, but because his production has ticked up so heavily after the first four seasons of his career, he could easily get it done by the end of the 2026-27 season.

Last summer, Draisaitl signed an eight-year contract extension with an average annual value of $14 million that kicks in this year. With the cap going up, it’s already looking like a bargain for one of the most dominant offensive forces of this era.

It’s quite possible that this will not be the only 400th goal scored by a member of the Oilers this season, as Connor McDavid is just 39 shy at 361. McDavid has not hit 39 since the 2022-23 season when he racked up 64.

The Oilers got off to an 0-0-1 start with the shootout loss in the first iteration of the Battle of Alberta this year, and they’ll look to pick up their first victory of the season when they take the ice again on Saturday at home against the Vancouver Canucks.
