Keon Coleman is a tremendous athlete. When he's on his game, the former second-round pick of the Buffalo Bills can be one heck of an NFL wide receiver. The issue for Coleman, apparently, is outside of the white lines.
Last season, he was benched for a quarter in a Week 3 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars for not being on time during the week leading up to the game. Last week, he was benched again. Head coach Sean McDermott held him out of Buffalo's Week 5 loss to the New England Patriots due to disciplinary reasons.
Coleman played the rest of the game and even notched a receiving touchdown, but on Thursday, he called the moment frustrating.
"It is frustrating because you know you're better than that as a person and individual," Coleman said, according to Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN. "And you don't like the things that it shows. Sometimes it might show that you don't care and that's not the case. You want to eliminate those things."
Coleman said that he was not surprised by the benching because he and McDermott had talked about it ahead of time. Why he was benched is remaining in-house, but it's worth noting that quarterback Josh Allen believes the 22-year-old wideout from Florida State understands the seriousness of the moment.
It's not just about him being disciplined. It's about the team, and Allen said he doesn't feel like he needs to say anything to Coleman because the 6-foot-4, 215-pound wideout already gets that.
"At the end of the day, this locker room, this team, you don't ever want to let your teammates down and I think he understands that, and he doesn't want to let us down," Allen said. "We move forward."
Coleman has caught 21 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns so far this season, averaging 10.8 yards per catch. As a rookie, he caught 29 passes for 556 yards and four touchdowns.
