The Toronto Blue Jays have had a busy offseason, revamping the rotation with pitchers Cody Ponce and Dylan Cease while signing Tyler Rogers to fortify the bullpen. However, there is one player who is conspicuously absent from the Blue Jays roster.
Shortstop Bo Bichette remains available in free agency. After an injury plagued 2024 season, Bichette was back to form in his walk year, posting a .311/.357/.483 batting line with 18 homers and 44 doubles in his 628 plate appearances. He is not only the best shortstop available on the open market but one of the top free agents.
That production has attracted interest in his services. The Red Sox, in particular, have displayed interest in luring Bichette from their division rivals, with Ari Alexander from 7 News Boston reporting that the two sides had a Zoom meeting.
Although Alexander reported that the meeting went well, Bichette may not be going anywhere. Blue Jays announcer Buck Martinez said in an interview on MLB Network that Bichette wants to return to Toronto as he wants to finish his career playing alongside first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Martinez further stated that Bichette could be willing to move to second base with Andres Gimenez at short, with an 80% chance that he returns to the Blue Jays.
A move away from short may be inevitable wherever Bichette signs. MLB Network's Jon Morosi reported that multiple teams had interest in Bichette at either second or third. Either move could have a learning curve; Bichette has never played third during his time as a professional and, aside from the 2025 World Series, had not made an appearance at second since he played there for one game at Triple-A in 2019.
Bichette could make a tremendous difference in any lineup with his strong contact rates and gap power. His impact in Toronto would go beyond the box score as he would be another example of ownership being willing to do what it takes to win a championship. After falling inches short in 2025, Bichette and the Blue Jays have unfinished business in October.
