Puka Nacua's injury may place No. 1 WR duties on Davante Adams

The Los Angeles Rams may now need Davante Adams to play like a No. 1 wide receiver again.

In Sunday's 17-3 road win over the Baltimore Ravens (1-5), Rams WR Puka Nacua injured his left ankle while trying to make a catch in the end zone. He appeared to grab his left leg in pain after landing awkwardly.

Nacua returned to the game in the third quarter but wasn't targeted again. He finished with two receptions for 28 yards.

Los Angeles Rams HC Sean McVay provides update on Puka Nacua

In a postgame news conference, McVay said he wasn't sure whether Nacua would be available for L.A.'s Week 7 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars (4-2) in Week 7 in London.

Nacua not playing would be a significant loss for the 4-2 Rams. Entering Sunday's game, the third-year WR led the NFL in receptions (52) and receiving yards (588).

How could Davante Adams help fill the void?

This offseason, the Rams signed Adams to a two-year, $46M deal with $26M guaranteed to serve as a WR2 to Nacua and to replace Cooper Kupp. Shortly after adding Adams, the Rams released Kupp, who has since signed with the Seattle Seahawks.

Thus far, Adams has suited that role. In six games, the 32-year-old wideout has 26 receptions for 396 yards and three touchdown catches. Against Baltimore, he had four receptions for 39 yards.

Adams, however, is capable of producing even better numbers. During the 2022 season with the Las Vegas Raiders, the three-time first-team All-Pro led the league in TD catches, with 14 in 17 games. He did the same with the Green Bay Packers during the 2020 season, catching 18 TDs in 14 games.

The Rams need Adams to return to that level if Nacua can't play in Week 7. L.A. lacks another primary receiver outside of those two. The Rams' next best pass-catcher is starting running back Kyren Williams, who ranks third on the team in receptions (16) and fourth in receiving yards (118).
