Baker Mayfield's words on injuries explain his MVP case

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers just won another game they should've lost.

They didn't have Bucky Irving, Mike Evans or Chris Godwin Jr. and they lost star rookie Emeka Egbuka early with a hamstring injury.

Baker Mayfield, however, never wavered. The former No. 1 pick put the team on his shoulders and took care of business against the San Francisco 49ers, completing 17-of-23 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns in what may have been his most impressive game yet.

More importantly, when asked about all the injuries, Mayfield demonstrated his leadership and winning approach by showing his confidence in whoever was left.

Baker Mayfield's winning mentality is the key behind his MVP season

“I truly, genuinely trust the guys that are in there,” Mayfield said, per the team's website. “They’re ready. We talk throughout the week. Guys are on the same page. I trust these guys, even though some of them may not have played a whole lot of ball, but when we’re on the same page, good things happen. You don’t have to have the perfect play when all your guys are fighting for each other and on the same page and that’s an example of that. Defense played great, special teams as well, and so it’s complementary football.”

Mayfield doesn't make up excuses or feel sorry about himself. He knows it's "next man up," and he's going to keep spreading the wealth and feeding everybody around him.

He completed passes to six different receivers in Sunday's win.

The Bucs are now sitting on a 5-1 record, and with 1,539 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and just one interception, Mayfield is arguably the leading MVP candidate right now.
