'MNF' takeaways: Jake Moody plays hero for Bears in walk-off win over Commanders

In the second game of a "Monday Night Football" doubleheader, the Chicago Bears overcame a mistake-filled game in windy and rainy conditions to take down the Washington Commanders, 25-24, with a walk-off field goal from kicker Jake Moody.

Here are four takeaways from the final NFL game of Week 6:

Jake Moody plays hero for Bears on short notice

Cairo Santos, the most accurate kicker in Bears history, missed Monday night's game due to a thigh injury. As a result, Moody, the former San Francisco 49er, was signed from the practice squad on Monday and filled in exceptionally well.

With Chicago's inability to finish drives, Moody was relied on multiple times, including the game-winning 38-yard field goal as time expired.

Overall, Moody made four of his five field goal attempts (47, 48, 41, 38). His only miss was a blocked 48-yarder to begin the fourth quarter, but otherwise, it is hard to imagine a team debut going much better for a kicker who experienced a difficult end to his tenure with the 49ers.

Turnovers a major issue for Commanders

The Bears had their struggles finishing drives with untimely penalties and third-down issues, but Washington could never put the game away because of its turnovers. The Commanders had three in the game, a first-quarter interception from quarterback Jayden Daniels as Washington was driving on its opening possession, and a pair of fumbles from Daniels and running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt.

This fumble from Daniels on a failed hand-off attempt to Croskey-Merritt on 3rd-and-1 across midfield gifted the Bears with excellent field position with just over three minutes to play. According to Next Gen Stats, the Bears' win probability nearly tripled as a result of the recovery, going from 14.9% to 42.3%.

With all the miscues from the Bears, there was no reason for Washington to lose this game, but three turnovers, regardless of the sloppy weather conditions or not, are usually hard to overcome.

Chicago somehow wins despite numerous miscues

Although the Bears had to settle for field goals on their first two drives, a one-yard rushing TD from QB Caleb Williams put them up 13-0 early in the second quarter. Aside from that, the mistakes were a major issue throughout the game.

They had a TD nullified by illegal formation, an incompletion on 4th-and-1 at Washington's 31-yard-line, a 48-yard field goal attempt blocked, nine penalties for 84 yards and went 3-of-10 on third down. The Bears have the seventh-best third-down conversion percentage (43.08%), so their inability to convert more of them on Monday night was surprising.

Williams was solid with two TDs and 252 passing yards, but the star for Chicago on offense was running back D'Andre Swift, who had 14 carries for 108 yards and two receptions for 67 yards and a TD. That made a huge difference in a mistake-filled game.

Turnovers from Jayden Daniels overshadow solid night

Daniels was 19-of-26 for 211 yards and three TDs in the air, with an additional 10 carries for 52 yards. The two turnovers, though, ultimately proved to be costly in the end.

Daniels made some miraculous throws, like his 22-yard strike to wide receiver Chris Moore to put the Commanders on the board in the second quarter. He kept his team in the game, but made some rare turnovers, something that has not been an issue for him in the NFL. The play-making ability was on display, but the giveaways kept Washington from closing this game out in the end.
