Titans interim HC outlines plan to resolve Cam Ward issue that contributed to firing of Brian Callahan

Tennessee Titans interim head coach Mike McCoy realizes he must tailor their offense to rookie quarterback Cam Ward, not the other way around.

On Monday, the 1-5 Titans fired head coach Brian Callahan after he went 4-19 in 23 games with the club. Before Callahan's dismissal, 2025 No. 1 overall pick Ward told The Athletic's Michael Silver, "I'm not playing how I want to play right now," indicating he was uncomfortable in the team's offense. On Tuesday, McCoy outlined his plan to fix that.

Mike McCoy plans to design the offense around Cam Ward's strengths

"Players not plays," McCoy said when asked about his approach with Ward. "What does Cam do best? And what do we do best as an offense? ... We have to look at our scheme and what we are doing, and it's going to change from week to week."

That'll be challenging for McCoy to determine. Through six weeks, the Titans rank second to last in the league in points per game (13.8) and last in yards per game (232.3). During this span, Ward has completed 55% of his passes for 1,101 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions.

A good place to start would be running more screen passes. Per Pro Football Focus, 9.3% of Ward's 237 dropbacks this season have been screen passes. In 13 games during his last season at Miami, 16.5% of his 491 dropbacks were such.

Doing so would give Ward easier completions. According to PFF, he has completed 18 of 22 screen passes (81.8%) this season. In his final season at Miami, the 23-year-old completed 72 of 78 screen passes (92.3%).

Now, that won't solve all the Titans' problems. This offseason, they must surround Ward with a better supporting cast. Following a 20-10 Week 6 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, a Raiders coach told Silver, "That might be the worst team I've seen in 25 years."

Still, McCoy revamping the offense for Ward could help the QB start trending in the right direction, imperative for the franchise.
