Chicago Bears' Ben Johnson makes curious statement on player's future

The Chicago Bears have an important decision to make this week on special teams. The Bears elevated Jake Moody from the practice squad to play the Washington Commanders on “Monday Night Football” as Cairo Santos was sidelined with a quadriceps injury.

The 2023 third-round pick made four of his five field-goal attempts, including a long of 48 yards. He made a game-winning 38-yard field goal to give Chicago a 25-24 win over Washington in front of 64,457 fans at Northwest Stadium.

The Bears must decide if they want to sign Moody to the 53-man roster this week and release Santos, a team captain. Santos is well known for his accuracy, but he struggles with long attempts and kickoffs, something that is a bad flaw to have with the league’s new kickoff rules. It came back to bite Chicago in Week 1.

If the Bears keep Moody on the practice squad, any team can sign the former San Francisco 49ers kicker to their 53-man roster.

A big decision for the Chicago Bears

During his Monday afternoon news conference, Bears head coach Ben Johnson wouldn’t commit to keeping Moody or Santos.

“We’re very, very happy that he’s here and he chose to be here with us,” Johnson said. “That came through for us there last night. In terms of the future, we’ll see how that all plays out. But, once again, he came in here for a reason and we know he’s a good football player.”

The 49ers moved on from Moody after his struggles following a high-ankle sprain in 2024. Johnson sees Moody gaining confidence in Chicago.

“I think it just builds confidence, not only with the coaching staff, but his teammates with him as well,” Johnson said. “It goes a long way for his own confidence in himself too. I think he knows the type of player he’s capable of being. I think we all knew that when we acquired him.”

Moody is thankful for the fresh start. He told the ABC broadcast on Monday night that he felt supported on the sideline from his new Bears teammates.

“It feels amazing to get all that support after the game from all my teammates,” Moody said. “I got here not too long ago, but for everybody to embrace me and take me in as one of their own, it’s an amazing feeling.”
