Jets' Aaron Glenn oddly compares Justin Fields to MVP quarterbacks

First-year New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has repeatedly clarified that he would stick with quarterback Justin Fields as his starter for Sunday's home game against the Carolina Panthers (3-3).

On Friday, Glenn boldly compared the 26-year-old to Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills star Josh Allen in terms of release time on pass plays.

How Justin Fields compares to Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen regarding one aspect of play

"You look at Lamar, his numbers getting the ball out are higher than Justin's. Josh Allen's numbers are higher than Justin's," Glenn said, per Sports Illustrated's Zach Pressnell. "I think everybody tends to see who those guys are and understand that. For some reason, they don't understand Justin. I'm not sitting here saying that there aren't some times when he needs to get the ball out. He knows that. He articulated that to you guys. We're going to continue to work on that as much as we can."

Earlier in the week, Fields acknowledged that he needed to "be a little bit more aggressive" after he took nine sacks and finished with minus-10 net yards passing in the Jets' 13-11 Week 6 loss to the Denver Broncos. However, a different mindset isn't the only thing that separates Fields from the likes of Jackson and Allen.

Jackson has earned a pair of regular-season Most Valuable Player Awards, while Allen is the league's reigning MVP. Meanwhile, Fields has emerged as one of the NFL's most disappointing starting signal-callers after both the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers gave up on the 2021 first-round draft pick.

ESPN stats show that Fields began Friday ranked 31st out of 33 qualified players with a 35.7 adjusted QBR.

Justin Fields needs "to get the ball out" in certain instances

"When you look at the time he gets the ball out, some of those have been his best games, when he's holding the ball three seconds or what not," Glenn added about Fields. "That's who he is. Sometimes it's play calls, the way he sees things. I'm not sitting here saying he doesn't need to get the ball out — there's some quick game where the ball needs to come out. You work on those in practice. There's also an element of, we know who that player is."

Glenn reportedly wasn't in danger of losing his job before he offered his latest comments about Fields. Even if that's the case, Glenn may have to look to backup Tyrod Taylor if the MetLife Stadium crowd quickly turns on Fields on Sunday.
