Deion Sanders had unusual gesture for Colorado players

Colorado coach Deion Sanders remains in touch with his players’ needs at a level that not every program is.

Sanders recently hosted a scrimmage specifically for Buffaloes players that plan to transfer after the season. In a video, Sanders tells the players that he knows some of his players will leave the school, and that he wants to help them jump.

“I’m not crazy enough to think that all of you are going to be in the room next year,” Sanders said. “Some of you are going to jump in the portal. This is an opportunity for you to get some portal film. I’m the kind of coach that’s going to make sure we cut it, hype it up, give it to you however you want, make sure you’re looking good in your portal tape.”

Sanders is unquestionably in touch with the realities of modern college football. Many players, especially those that do not regularly feature in games, are going to enter the portal every season. Instead of trying to fight that, Sanders’ strategy is to try and make sure they have something to show other interested teams.

For Sanders, this cuts both ways. He has made use of the transfer portal to bolster his teams. It would be hypocritical of him to act like his incoming players are the only ones that matter.

The Buffs are 3-4 so far this season, though they are fresh off an upset win over Iowa State. Sanders has been coaching through some significant health issues, but has not missed any games.
