About 24 hours after New York Jets owner Woody Johnson basically blamed quarterback Justin Fields for the team's 0-7 start this season, first-year head coach Aaron Glenn avoided saying whether Fields or backup Tyrod Taylor will start Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals (3-4).
On Wednesday, Glenn responded to Johnson's comments, which seemed to indicate that the owner no longer wanted to see Fields in the lineup.
"The first thing I would say is he’s our owner and he has the right to his opinion," Glenn said, per Alex Smith of SNY. "And when you look at that, it’s really something that’s been said across the board from everyone, including Justin: we have to improve, and we understand that. We’ve gone two games without scoring a touchdown, and we have to make sure that we get better in that aspect."
As Glenn referenced, the Jets haven't recorded an offensive touchdown since their 37-22 Week 5 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 5. According to ESPN stats, Fields ended Week 7 ranked 31st out of 33 qualified players with a 31.8 adjusted QBR for the season.
Glenn mentioned he didn't want to give the Bengals "a competitive advantage" by revealing his starting quarterback's identity on Wednesday. That said, Taylor is officially listed as day-to-day with a knee injury.
"I have all the confidence in the world in Justin," Glenn added. "I have all the confidence in the world in Tyrod. ...The reason why I have confidence is because I have confidence in the coaching staff, also, to help those guys navigate through what they're going through right now."
Johnson's comments on Tuesday have raised questions among some outsiders about whether he might interfere with Glenn's control of the team's depth chart. On Wednesday, Glenn made it clear that he has the final say on which quarterback will start at Cincinnati's Paycor Stadium.
"Woody puts that in my hand as far as who plays," Glenn explained, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "I don’t see that changing. He trusts me to make that decision. He made a comment, and he has every right to that comment. That comment was actually said by a number of guys, including our quarterback, as far as the efficiency of how we play. We’re not gonna fight that, we understand that. We have to get better, we do. I don’t think there’s anywhere in that comment where he said he doesn’t like Justin."
Glenn also insisted that "we’re all on the same page" regarding the Jets' need to improve this fall. At this point, it's fair to wonder if Fields has played his last meaningful snap as a Jet, as long as Taylor can stay healthy through Week 18.
