It's been nearly four years since Hendrick Motorsports last won a NASCAR Cup Series championship. For most teams, a four-year title drought isn't a drought at all. But inside the hallowed halls of HMS, it feels like an eternity.
Hendrick has won 14 Cup Series championships. It will have the opportunity to win a 15th at Phoenix Raceway on Nov. 2, with drivers Kyle Larson — who snagged the final Championship 4 berth on points on Sunday — and William Byron — who won his way into the Championship 4 on Sunday - battling the Joe Gibbs Racing duo of Chase Briscoe and Denny Hamlin for the crown.
Jeff Gordon won four of those 14 titles driving for HMS, and the current vice chairman of HMS knows how important getting to hoist the Bill France Cup again would be for the organization.
"I think we probably haven’t been counting the days and the years quite as much as maybe some others have," Gordon said in a news conference at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday. "In our minds, we’ve also had two there, but it’s usually been with an owner and a driver.
This really is a huge accomplishment. Again, just to be there, just to get this far in the season, have two going for the championship. Yeah, we want it bad. If we’re in it and we’ve got a shot at it, we want to come away with it."
HMS certainly had to work just to get two cars into the Championship 4, but a 15th title would be vindication for the organization's effort at Martinsville.
