Why Alec Bohm should be in the Phillies' plans for the future

The Philadelphia Phillies enter the offseason with questions after failing to reach the World Series for the third straight season.

President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski shed some light on how the Phillies will handle this offseason during his season debrief on Oct. 16, making headlines with his comments about Phillies franchise star Bryce Harper not having an “elite” season.

Things are likely to change in Philadelphia. One of those changes could come in the form of trading third baseman and 2024 All-Star Alec Bohm, but the Phillies should think carefully about such a move.

Alec Bohm has been one of the top 3B in baseball

Entering the final year of his deal with the Phillies, Bohm is facing a critical season to show he's worth signing long-term. He had a down season in 2025 from a power perspective (18 doubles and 11 home runs) and his run production (59 RBI), but Bohm still showed his ability to put the ball in play, ranking 10th in the National League and tied for 19th in baseball with a .287 batting average.

A pure contact hitter, Bohm has had a batting average north of .270 for four straight seasons. He has also shown growth defensively at third base, going from a .960 fielding percentage and committing 14 errors in 2024 to a .981 fielding percentage (second to Ke’Bryan Hayes, .987) and committing just five errors in 2025.

Rumors about trading Bohm have swirled for some time now, but those whispers will likely be amplified this winter. He's owed somewhere near $10.250 million in arbitration, per Spotrac, making him one of the more valuable potentially available third base options. Others like Alex Bregman (who is likely to opt out of his deal) and Nolan Arenado (on the trade block) will command high salaries over multiple years.

The Phillies should consider signing Bohm to a long-term contract rather than trading him. His bat-to-ball skills are valuable to a lineup built around power. Further, a change in role could help maximize Bohm's potential. He's spent time as the Phillies' four-hole hitter during the last couple of seasons, which doesn't complement his makeup as a hitter. Acquiring pure power-hitter would allow Bohm to hit fifth or sixth, slots better suited to his skill set, and lead to better production from Bohm and the lineup as a whole.

With the Phillies trying to retool and figure out the formula to win it all with a talented, but aging, core, Bohm should be considered a long-term part of that plan.
