Multiple national NFL reporters raised eyebrows when they recently suggested that the Cleveland Browns could trade star pass-rusher Myles Garrett this fall after Cleveland signed him to a four-year, $160M contract extension that included $123.5M guaranteed this past offseason.
It sounds like somebody within the Browns wanted to silence such chatter well before the trade deadline arrives at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
On Wednesday afternoon, Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that she has been told there is "zero chance" the club will trade Garrett this week. Cabot added that such a transaction "hasn't even been discussed" by people within the Browns.
ESPN's Adam Schefter shared that a source said "people have a better chance of winning the lottery" as it pertains to the Browns possibly trading Garrett before Nov. 4.
While Garrett has made it known multiple times this fall that he is frustrated with the state of the 2-6 Browns, it's worth mentioning that he hasn't asked to be traded as he did shortly before Super Bowl LIX was played this past February. Most recently, he tallied five sacks during Cleveland's 32-13 blowout loss at the New England Patriots in Week 8. Following that game, Garrett referred to rookie Dillon Gabriel as "a young quarterback that’s fighting" to earn wins.
Also on Wednesday, Browns reporter Zac Jackson of The Athletic hinted that Cleveland could want up to "four first-round" draft picks in return for Garrett's services.
Shortly before Cabot and Schefter offered their updates, word broke that the Detroit Lions and Aidan Hutchinson had agreed to a four-year contract extension that is worth $180M with $141M in guarantees.
Later in the afternoon, ESPN and NFL Network personality Rich Eisen openly wondered during his radio show if Garrett regrets not forcing his way out of Cleveland now that Hutchinson and Micah Parsons of the Green Bay Packers have inked lucrative extensions with Super Bowl contenders.
What's done is done, as it appears Garrett will remain associated with the Browns until further notice.
