Brad Marchand might be known as “The Rat” on the ice. But off it, he has always had a big heart.

The Florida Panthers forward will fill in as coach of the March & Mill Co. Hunters at the Nova Scotia U-18 level following the loss of coach JP MacCallum’s daughter, Selah.

“This gesture reflects the true spirit of the hockey community in Nova Scotia, one built on compassion, loyalty, and connection that extends far beyond the rink,” a statement from league president Paul Graham said. “Our thoughts are with JP, his loved ones, and the entire Hunters organization.”

The game, which features the Hunters taking on the Halifax Macs, will serve as a fundraiser to support the MacCallum family. One of Marchand’s jerseys will be a raffle prize during the game on Wednesday, while an online donation link has been posted, as well.

MacCallum is a close personal friend of Marchand’s, having worked with the multi-time Stanley Cup champion during offseason training. He has coached at various levels of professional hockey, and even served as an assistant coach with Hungary’s men’s national team from 2009-12.

The Hunters sit sixth in their division through 15 games this season. They won the first meeting between them and the Macs earlier this season by a score of 3-2.

Marchand last suited up for the Panthers on Saturday, registering an assist. He has 11 points in 10 games during his first full season with the club. The 37-year-old won his second Stanley Cup championship last June after joining the Panthers as a trade deadline acquisition. He signed a six-year extension to stay with the club over the summer.

It’s unclear as to when Marchand could return to the lineup, but the Panthers do not play again until Nov. 1 when they welcome the Dallas Stars to town.
