The Florida State Seminoles are 3-4 and riding a four-game losing skid. Head coach Mike Norvell needs to pick up a win in the worst way, but the Wake Forest Demon Deacons are not going to make things easy for him.
FSU's defense will have a notable challenge on its hands because the Seminoles are preparing for not just one quarterback to play against them, but two.
This past month has seen Wake Forest play both redshirt senior Robby Ashford as well as sophomore Deshawn Purdie. Ashford began the year as the starter for Wake Forest, but Purdie has been playing as of late in relief of the super-senior because he's been banged up.
It's not clear yet who will get the start this weekend for the Demon Deacons, but as far as Norvell and the Seminoles are concerned, they're going to be preparing for both players
“Yeah, we’re preparing for both,” Norvell said in a recent news conference. “I mean expecting, like that’s, you saw last game. Purdie started the game but then I think the second series Ashford was in. He’s obviously a dynamic player, but he’s been dealing with some injuries here of late.”
As Norvell alluded to, both quarterbacks played in Wake Forest's last game, which was a 13-12 win over the SMU Mustangs.
Purdie started that game for the Demon Deacons and completed 14-of-26 passes for 183 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. He did make a huge throw with 12 seconds to go that set up the game-winning field goal, though:
It might get lost because the next play is the game winning field goal, but the catch to set it up is kinda nuts? + to Purdie for getting it off with pressure coming, the adjustment Kamrean Johnson makes to snag it is wild pic.twitter.com/KtqVfCosSv

Ashford is a former SEC starter, though, who started games for both the Auburn Tigers and South Carolina Gamecocks. Against SMU, he completed 4-of-10 passes for 33 yards and a touchdown, so head coach Jake Dickert could use the transfer quarterback to beat FSU.
Eventually, Norvell believes Dickert will show his hand, but until then, the Seminoles defense has to prepare for both players.
“Both guys we have to be ready and prepared for,” Norvell said. “Then adapt and adjust to what shows up throughout the game.”
