Mookie Betts breaks slump, plays hero for Dodgers in World Series Game 6

Prior to Friday night’s nail-biter, Los Angeles Dodgers star shortstop Mookie Betts was just 3-for-23 in the World Series and coming off the worst season of his career. But in what has been a deflating year for the former MVP, Betts was still able to come through for his team when it needed him most.

Batting cleanup in Game 6 of the World Series, Betts came to the plate in the top of the third inning with the bases loaded and two outs. At the time, the Dodgers held a slim 1-0 lead on the brink of elimination. In a 1-2 count against Toronto Blue Jays veteran righty Kevin Gausman, Betts knocked a base hit through the left side of the infield, scoring two runs, making it 3-0 in the Dodgers' favor.

Mookie Betts' single is enough to send the Dodgers to Game 7 of the World Series

It wasn’t much, but Betts’ two-run single proved to be the deciding hit of the game. The Dodgers would go on to win 3-1, forcing a Game 7 in a bout that centered largely on pitching (as well as the defensive contributions of second baseman Miguel Rojas and left fielder Enrique Hernandez).

On the night, Betts went 1-for-3 with a walk. Betts' two RBI in the third are the only runs he batted in during the Fall Classic this year.

To say that Betts has completely broken out of his slump may be a stretch, but he did reach base twice. And in any case, it is because of him that this series is going the distance. For Betts, who has been stuck in rut for most of the postseason and regular season, rising to the status of World Series hero is certainly momentum he can build upon and likely lifts a significant weight off his shoulders. And for the Dodgers, Betts’ bat has never been more important.

The Dodgers have been mired in offensive stagnation, scoring just six runs in the past three games. They have been outscored by the Blue Jays 30-21 in the World Series. Most of the Dodgers’ success has been based on pitching, including two brilliant gems from Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who started on Friday. At a time when they are scoring so few runs, a last-minute resurgence from Betts could go a long way to ensuring another championship for Los Angeles.
